ABOUT  AMP U T   CHAT

HISTORY

AMP U T Chat was started in August 1995. We surfed the web and found an impressive quantity of WWW pages, scouted the AOL message boards and found topic folders there, and we discovered some listservs. We found there were numerous amputees on AOL that wanted "something," and suspected there were others on Prodigy, Compuserve and many non-commercial internet servers--"something" that was not so technical that they couldn't follow what was being discussed, something that wasn't one of the "love and romance" connections, something that DID address real life, day-to-day, concerns and provide a "safe," comfortable place to chat and share.

At the time our primary internet account was with AOL, and we used an AOL "chat channel" (i.e. AOL chat rooms are only accessible to AOL members) WE WERE NOT and ARE NOT affiliated with AOL. Our chats were conducted in a "non-public" room. While it was suggested that we join the disABILITIES Forum, and this was offered, we chose not to go this route. In this way we avoid those annoying little "snerts"--those bored wanderers that pop into a room and ask for age/sex check, make silly, inane or insulting remarks, scroll, etc.

Producing a newsletter and hosting a chat every week was taxing. John's health isn't predictable and there wasn't a concensus on what night and what time to meet. We tried several different nights and the original night turned out to be the best. However, even that dwindled due to busy lives, etc.

FUTURE

What we have provided in the previous newsletters here on this web site.  There are no plans to re-new the periodic newsletters.  There just isn't enough time in our schedules.

POLICY

There are many "lurkers" for many reasons--some, not wanting to publicly post their most personal questions, problems, concerns, etc., some lurk because they are "put-off" by "SPAM" and the thought of devotees harassing them.

Any email we receive is considered confidential unless otherwise specified.
